Autosport Show 2010
By Ryan McLean, guest blogger
Autosport International is ‘The Racing Car Show’, so I took a trip up to the NEC in Birmingham last Saturday to see what all the fuss is about.
It turns out there is plenty to whet the appetite of car fanatics. I’ve put together a selection of some of the cars that stood out for me at the show.
Arguably the prettiest was this little Porsche 356 Speedster. Just look at its happy little face.
Mini Specialists Lohen had their Mini Cooper D Clubman on show. The car has been given a full performance overhaul and some styling tweaks too, making it possibly the coolest young-family car around.
Just don’t let the kids near it! These two are a couple of my favourite supercars available at the minute: the Noble M600 and the Nissan GT-R. Offering exceptional performance they stand for two very different things: the Noble providing a raw driver experience, whereas the Nissan makes use of the latest technology available. They’re both incredible cars in their own right.
Wortec’s Chevrolet Camaro’s party piece is its active exhaust system which allows you to switch between a quiet and loud setting. You know that V8 is going to sound fantastic and it looks really sharp too. Based on the Lotus Exige S, the Lotus 2 Eleven may look a little unusual but it represents everything a driver would want from a track day car. You can even use it on the road with the addition of an after sales package from Lotus. It’ll definitely turn a few heads.
What do you do when a hot-hatch isn’t quite hot enough? You buy either of these. Mountune offer a package for the MK7 Fiesta Zetec-S or Titanium 1.6-litre models. A tweak of the ECU, a high flow air induction system and a high performance exhaust system means 0-60mph is reduced from 9.9 to 7.9.
On the other hand yo u could go for the Thorney Motorsport Vauxhall Astra VXR-R. Benefitting from race developed power, handling and braking enhancements, the VXR-R produces a whooping 300bhp. 0-60mph takes just 4.9 seconds and with a top speed of 170mph you can be confident you’ll have the quickest Astra at the traffic lights.
Finally, as a big fan of rallying I’ve got a soft spot for these two rally-bred classics. The Audi Sport Quattro and Ford Escort Cosworth are both icons of their era. Both offered great levels of performance and look as impressive on the road as they would on a rally stage.
