GM exploits Toyota quality surprise
Richard Aucock writes:
Toyota is going through a bit of a crisis in the US at the moment. It has just had to recall 2.3 million cars, to fix a problem with accelerator pedals that could become stuck. The Japanese giant has even stopped production of some cars while it figures a fix.
So, how’s this for a bit of opportunism? GM has unveiled a month-long incentive scheme, specifically for… yes, Toyota and Lexus owners. And what’s the reason GM is giving? Why, to compensate Toyota and Lexus owners whose trade-in values have dropped as a result of the news.
It’s PR genius, if a bit cheeky at the same time. GM, out of the goodness of its own heart, offers to help our owners who have been financially hit. And, if it so just happens to sow a few doubts about the relative integrity of Toyota’s models compared with its own, then hey. So be it. They’re only coming to the rescue, guys…
No other maker is (yet) following GM over in the US. But, at the same time you wonder if it’ll come back to bite them, it’s also hard not to admire GM’s brass neck…
