A taxi ride, AMG style

So, Bernd Maylander. By now if you’ve been reading my blogs you’ll know who he is. Not just F1 safety car driver. Not just occasional Sprinter minibus chaffeur. No, he’s also a taxi driver. OK, the AMG ‘ice taxi’ isn’t your usual minicab (not unless the ones round your way have 6.2-litre V8 engines, full roll cages and spiked ice tyres) and Bernd isn’t your usual driver. Going by the following vid it seems he’d been holding something back from the Sprinter drive. It’s quite a long lap and you’ll probably get the idea after the first 30 seconds or so but if you want a feel of how extensive the AMG Academy ice lake facility is watch the whole thing. I’m just surprised he didn’t get lost. Clearly there’s a ‘knowledge’ test even if your cab gets punted sideways at 80mph between walls of ice.
This was just one of the excitements from last night. Here’s our man from down under, Lew Fellowes, who managed to win the ‘race of champs’ contest despite never having driven on snow before. From watching him drive I got the impression he’s not entirely unaccustomed to driving a C63 sideways though, this being his own AMG in Australia. As well as an Evo 9. And a Subaru pickup running full STI-spec running gear. And various other things. Top bloke!

So that’s it for the Winter Sporting event, the staff now limbering up for a new party of drivers for the ‘pro’ level training which includes sessions at the wheel of the ice taxi. I wonder if I hang around if I can gatecrash the party for a few more days…
